In recent decades, China’s urbanization has reached a crucial point when, for the first time in history, over half of the population is reportedly living in a city. This process of rapid urbanization will
In an effort to promote urban studies in China, the 农夫娱乐, The Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences at Hong Kong University, and the Shanghai History Research Center at East China Normal University launched a series of advanced training workshops, 2010年开始。
The second training workshop will take place in June 2013 on 东中国师范大学’s Minhang campus in Shanghai. As indicated by the title, this workshop will introduce various approaches to urban studies from the social sciences and humanities in an attempt to learn how these approaches might be useful in the study of Chinese cities. We take the comparative method as essential for both theoretical engagement and empirical research by encouraging a reconsideration of China’s urban experience in a global, as well as historical, context while also learning from China’s experience to enrich or even redefine our understanding of urbanization. Professors from Harvard and other top research universities in the United States and China will be invited to address a select group of trainees from various institutions within and outside of China. Through the workshop we hope to help attract and train young scholars for the development of an urban studies field in China. It is also our hope to use the workshop as a platform for collaborative research among Chinese 而美国学者。
We plan to enroll about 20 promising scholars (including current doctoral students and young faculty and researchers) to participate in an intensive one-week training program. Lectures, discussions, and readings will be in both Chinese and English, so trainees must have a high-level of academic competence in both languages. The workshop will include opportunities for attendees to explore new approaches in their research and develop new ways of conceptualizing China’s urban issues. Trainees will be encouraged to draw upon their personal academic backgrounds and research interests to design original research projects. After the workshop concludes, a very small number of outstanding trainees from Asia may be selected as Harvard-Yenching Visiting 学者 or Visiting Fellows to spend the following academic year (2013-14) in residence at Harvard to pursue advanced studies.
